Meet Capital Art

Capital Art is the first African art collection management system designed to help art collectors protect and potentially increase the value of their art collection.

MEET THE FOUNDERS

Capital Art currently consists of two co-founders Karabo Morule and Alexia Walker

The team is still in its early-stage so the co-founders don’t have defined roles however, Alexia knows all things art and marketing-related. Alexia is an art professional and has successfully built and operated a number of businesses,

Karabo, on the other hand, knows all things financial services-related, being an actuary by profession and having worked in investment banking, long-term insurance, and savings, and is marginally more tech-inclined. Interestingly, both co-founders are innovative and creative in complementary ways.

THE PROBLEM BEING SOLVED

We’re trying to solve the issue of the value of art is not maximised because the management of art portfolios are not efficient.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WHY THE PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE SOLVED

This is an important problem to solve because the African art market is under-represented and under-valued on a global level and this is driven by the problem our startup is solving. Most art collectors find themselves having a deeply personal connection to the artwork they have collected and since it is priceless, it is important to protect the assets as much as possible.

OPPORTUNITIES COIVD-19 PROVIDED

We actually started Capital Art during the Lockdown. We grew an understanding of the landscape at various levels and started preparing to register the business from April 2020.

For Alexia, attending international art fairs and the workload of advising collectors would have also taken time away from working on this startup. The lockdown has also given the co-founders the opportunity to be part of this cohort of FSAT Labs since we are Johannesburg-based.

ASPIRATIONS FOR INCUBATION PERIOD AT FSAT LABS

We both want to achieve learning and support for our startup journey, as well as ready the business for funding as we think this will help us get to product-market fit. While working hard we would like to have fun and enjoy going through the incubation period.
