Cheese App making an impact in Stellenbosch

The Cheese App, a digital solution that enables healthy interaction between the general public and people in need, is a making a massive impact in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. The Cheese App team joined the FSAT Labs Incubation Programme for season 5. We are proud to see the impact they are making in Stellenbosch.

Cheese initially released a paper based coupon that can be bought at more than 50 retail outlets across Stellenbosch and have used this as an early pilot to test product market fit. After the massive success of this coupon based-system, Cheese released a mobile app that allows users to use their credit card or SnapScan to purchase a selection of support items for a homeless person or someone in need.

The items that currently can be bought include:

  • Groceries (which excludes alcohol and tobacco)

  • A nights stay at the Stellenbosch Night Shelter

  • A warm meal

  • A quick meal

  • A coffee

Once the item is redeemed at the partner outlet, the giver is notified in the app, completing the loop of seeing one’s donation make an impact in the person’s life.

Through the Cheese App, the Cheese team is decreasing the amount of cash in the street economy (which often ends up purchasing goods that are delaying rehabilitation, such as alcohol) and direct people in need to organisations where they can receive the proper support.
